- A PAL’s life - presentation for the OMII-UK board, May 16, 2008 [Abstract]

A PAL’s life
By Marco RoosIn a brief overview I will present my motivation as a life scientist to advocate e-science in the life science and bioinformatics communities. I present how the OMII-UK PAL policy helps me to reach out to these communities, e.g. by allowing me to steer developments and advocate OMII-UK tools. As an example I will demonstrate our ‘e-science approach to text mining’ has served as a showcase for the application of Taverna in the life sciences, and how this enhances collaborative science. Together with myExperiment we can demonstrate how a cycle from biological question, computation, and back to biology is supported. This positive story has influenced to the Netherlands BioInformatics Centre (NBIC) which now endorses e-science for the Netherlands and chose Taverna as their main platform. This made me a representative of an important international collaboration that not only improves the quality and relevance of the OMII-UK software, and effectively markets it, but also adds value to it through content (workflows), talks, services and development (through code contribution). I will propose that the open, user-oriented approach of OMII-UK has made it a prominent leader in the adoption of e-science in the life science domain, and proving the concept of e-science from core computer science to applications and back.
Personalia
I work for the Adaptive Information Disclosure (AID) group at the Informatics Institute of the University of Amsterdam. AID investigates and develops knowledge extraction and knowledge management for the Dutch Virtual Laboratory e-Science (VL-e) project and the Bioinformatics research project BioRange.
For NBIC I am member of the core group of BioAssist, a national bioinformatics support programme.
For OMII-UK I am a PAL enjoying a warm and fuzzy feeling.
